It has been extremely busy at the Jewellers Academy, Training Center, Yorkshire over recent weeks and with the second 40-week course starting in the coming days and the short specialised courses starting in March it is all getting exciting!!
Our current trainees had the pleasure of a lecture on reclamation from Paul Harvey of Presman Mastermelt Ltd, the UK ‘s largest bullion dealer, also sitting their first in a series of bench & theory tests. The Academy follows the Swiss Industry way of examining trainees, that is, a selection of simulated repairs (based on their learnings to date) where the trainee must detect the fault on the item and repair to a high standard within a specific time, this will begin to prepare the trainees for efficient commercial work when they graduate. The trainees also moved onto micro welders and completed exercises / projects to help them understand the capabilities of the flame and to begin to train at this early stage on the basics of claw work as one can view in the slideshow.
With a steadily moving pace to the course, basic smelting, forming shanks/profiles and ring sizing is currently being taught and we are extremely impressed with the exacting standards of workmanship which the trainees continue to deliver.
It has now been decided the Academy will support and mentor all trainees from any of our 40-week courses for 12 months after graduation, free of charge. The graduates will be invited back to the Academy once every 2 months to iron out any problems they may be having, extra training requirements, if necessary, etc. The Jewellers Academy would like to see all graduates who pass through their doors being successful in their chosen career and intend to support when we can.
Finally, as previously mentioned in an earlier post, it is highly likely, due to the demand, we will be launching one further 40- week course (1 day per week) which may take place on a weekend. We are already oversubscribed in numbers but will advertise as usual to give everyone a fair chance to apply for the 6 places available. Previous unsuccessful applicants may reapply, all applicants must attend the workshop for a bench test/interview. No experience required for this in-depth, module packed course which is the best the UK jewellery industry has to offer.
