Derek, the founder of the Academy, comes from a lineage of watchmakers and goldsmiths. From a young age, he immersed himself in the jewellery trade, observing his father in their workshop. Eventually, Derek pursued his passion for watchmaking by studying at the prestigious Irish Swiss Institute of Horology.

During his time there, he recognised that the quality of workmanship is paramount when entrusted with repairing clients' items. He further honed his skills at the Manchester School of Jewellery and, upon graduating in 1994, embarked on a self-employed career within the industry. Although he operated retail shops, his true passion lay in the repair aspect of the business. Through mentoring apprentices and enhancing the skills of fellow tradespeople, he discovered his real vocation. Over the years, he observed a decline in interest in the trade, coupled with a lack of knowledge on how to sustain a successful career in jewellery while maintaining high standards in repairs. The Academy represents a proactive step towards elevating standards and knowledge within the jewellery sector. Whether one aspires to specialise in repairs or retail, the Academy offers a course tailored to their needs. Derek has collaborated with leading experts in the field and top UK companies to establish the first Academy in the north of England.

With over 25 years of experience, Derek has created a groundbreaking commercial training method for Silversmithing and Goldsmithing. Drawing on his rigorous training from the Swiss watch industry, this approach seamlessly blends time-honoured skills with modern innovations. We are committed to delivering comprehensive core training for individuals determined to excel in their craft.
